We are artists. When we can't find the beauty, we create it.
A.E. Samaan
Art should be for sale. The artist should not.
A.H. Scott
Art has the ability to change minds. Passion is what changes the world. When both collide, it's as powerful as a bomb. Art isn't pretty and poised fluff. Art is brutal and snarling. Artists growl. This is the roar of change that beats within them. - 8/29/11
Aberjhani
To create art with all the passion in one's soul is to live art with all the beauty in one's heart.
Abhijit Naskar
Art is the medicine for the soul.

I've been strongly influenced, in technique as well as subject matter, by some of the early 20th-century book illustrators

They will talk about you and it won't always be good. You won't even know them but they will critique you - and judge you - and everything you stand for. Their words will cut through your heart-strings and make you question the hopes and dreams that have gnawed your soul since birth. I warn you, because I believe your unique gift of expression needs to be shared. Resist cowering down and holding back for fear of rejection. Spread those creative wings and create. But, prepare yourself. Because naysayers are not a possibility, they are a guarantee.
Ama H. Vanniarachchy
I love the smell of pastels...that breaths life into my soul.

Magic is the stunning art of surprising your audience, so that nothing else surprises them.
Andrea Pomelli
Feet on the ground, head in the clouds. That's how giants walk.
Andy Crouch
In this world, this life, flow [the times when our work or play so absorbs and attunes our energies that we lose track of time] comes to an end. The canvas is dry, the fugue is complete, the band plays the tag one more time and then resolves on the final chord. And, too, the book is finished, the service is over, the lights go up in the darkened theater and we emerge blinking into the bright lights of the real world. But what if the timeless, creative world we had glimpsed is really the real world -- and it is precisely its reality that gave it such power to captivate us for a while? What if our ultimate destiny is that moment of enjoyment and engagement we glimpse in the artist's studio?
Ann Lauterbach
The crucial job of artists is to find a way to release materials into the animated middle ground between subjects, and so to initiate the difficult but joyful process of human connection.
Ann Voskamp
When we stop fearing failure, we start being artists.
Anna Katharine Green
There are two kinds of artists in this world; those that work because the spirit is in them, and they cannot be silent if they would, and those that speak from a conscientious desire to make apparent to others the beauty that has awakened their own admiration.
Anneli Rufus
The loner who looks fabulous is one of the most vulnerable loners of all.
Anthony Burgess
Look, I don't see why bad artists - I mean artists who are obviously incompetent... - why they should be presented hypocritically as good artists just because they're supposed to be advancing the frontiers of freedom of expression or... ...demonstrating that there should be no limit on subject matter.
Anton Chekhov
The role of the artist is to ask questions, not answer them.
Arthur Holitscher
I spoke fire, laughed smoke, and madness spilled forth from my inspiration.

Note to myself - It is time for me to start taking my guitar lessons. One of my neighbor's singing and guitar strumming skills are so cool that I can't stop marveling at the music wafting around here.

Artists are the serfs of a leisure society.
Brenda Ueland
By encouraging the critic in themselves (the hater) they have killed the artist (the lover).
C.G. Jung
The biographies of great artists make it abundantly clear that the creative urge is often so imperious that it battens on their humanity and yokes everything to the service of the work, even at the cost of health and ordinary human happiness. The unborn work in the psyche of the artist is a force of nature that achieves its end either with tyrannical might or with the subtle cunning of nature herself, quite regardless of the personal fate of the man who is its vehicle. The creative urge lives and grows in him like a tree in the earth from which it draws its nourishment.
Charlotte Eriksson
You have to believe that your voice can mean something. You have to believe that what you do matters. And you have to keep going even on days you can't find that belief. If you can't do it for yourself, you do it for all the other young souls who need to be shown that things are possible. That they too can do that thing they dream of. You do it despite the doubts and the struggles. You do it because it's what you came here to do.That's what makes an artist.
Charlotte Eriksson
It's 4am again and I'm just getting started. People are boring and I want to burn with excitement or anger and bleed, bleed through my words. I want to get all fucked up and write real and raw and ugly and beautifully. I bet you're sleeping safe and calm, and you can stay there, it's safer there, and you wouldn't stand one night on this journey my mind wanders off to every night you close your eyes. I'll stay here one day and I will never come down. I promise I can fly before I hit the ground. It doesn't even hurt anymore. I swear, it doesn't hurt.
Christian Bauman
Writing is the only art form where a good number of the artists make a slice of their living criticizing one another in print, in public.
Christina Strigas
When I feel too much and the universe aches inside of me.
Christina Strigas
The only way to find art is to lose touch with reality.
Christopher Moore
I love you, Lucien, but I am a muse, you are an artist, I am not here to make you comfortable.
Craig Raine
The task of the artist at any time is uncompromisingly simple
Criss Jami
I feel as though whenever I create something, my Mr. Hyde wakes up in the middle of the night and starts thrashing it. I sometimes love it the next morning, but other times it is an abomination.
Criss Jami
From recovery to rags and rags to recovery symbolizes art - a perfect compilation of human imperfections.
Criss Jami
When a poet digs himself into a hole, he doesn't climb out. He digs deeper, enjoys the scenery, and comes out the other side enlightened.
D.W. Winnicott
Artists are people driven by the tension between the desire to communicate and the desire to hide.
Dada Bhagwan
The value is not in the art, whether there are more artists or less artists, the value depends on it.
David Foenkinos
Words do not always need a destination. We can leave them behind us at the borders of feelings.Running around headless in the vague zone. And that is the privilege of artists: to live in confusion.
De philosopher DJ Kyos
Talent & Skills are useless & won't get you anywhere, without lot of practice, commitment & prioritization
Diego Rivera
An artist is above all a human being, profoundly human to the core. If the artist can't feel everything that humanity feels, if the artist isn'tcapable of loving until he forgets himself and sacrifices himself if necessary, if he won't put down his magic brush and head the fightagainst the oppressor, then he isn't a great artist.
Dominic Riccitello
Masochists hold on to broken people. Artists hold on to broken memories.
Don DeLillo
Time and death: It's the ultimate vision of an artist at the end of everything. It's just what's there. It was not something I planned to do.
Dorothy L. Sayers
To make a deliberate falsification for personal gain is the last, worst depth to which either scholar or artist can descend in work or life.(Letter to Muriel St. Clare Byrne, 8 September 1935)
Doug Stanhope
Artist communities love to bullshit each other and glad-hand one another, and there's no room for the crippling honesty of comedy.I'm a painter -- well... you don't...probably need to do that.. . . if you're painting something that doesn't exist, I understand that, I can appreciate- . . . but if your pain- 'oh, it's a barnyard scene in autumn'--well then just take a picture of a barn in autumn! It's way better than a painting! - Before Turning the Gun on Himself [2012]
E.A. Bucchianeri
I am an artist you know ... it is my right to be odd.
E.A. Bucchianeri
There has to be a cut-off somewhere between the freedom of expression and a graphically explicit free-for-all.
E.A. Bucchianeri
... an artist should paint from the heart, and not always what people expect. Predictability often leads to the dullest work, in my opinion, and we have been bored stiff long enough I think.
E.A. Bucchianeri
Weirdism is definitely the cornerstone of many an artist's career.
E.A. Bucchianeri
Speed is not always a constituent to great work, the process of creation should be given time and thought.
E.A. Bucchianeri
While art thrives on the blazing colours of scandal, literature blossoms on the dark soil of tragedy.
E.A. Bucchianeri
She preferred the quiet solitary atmosphere, to create in her own world of paint and colour, the thrill of anticipating how her works would turn out as she eyed the blank sheets of paper or canvas before starting her next masterpiece. How satisfying it was to mess around in paint gear, without having to worry about spills, starch or frills, that was the life!
E.A. Bucchianeri
I mean really, how could an artistic individual stay grounded in the nitty-gritty of how many minutes per pound meat has to stay in the oven when trying to fathom the creative philosophy behind the greatest artistic minds of the world?
E.A. Bucchianeri
...it's just another one of those things I don't understand: everyone impresses upon you how unique you are, encouraging you to cultivate your individuality while at the same time trying to squish you and everyone else into the same ridiculous mould. It's an artist's right to rebel against the world's stupidity.
E.L. Konigsburg
For the novelist or poet, for the scientist or artist, the question is not where do ideas come from, the question is how they come. The how is the mystery. The how is fragile.
E.M. Forster
He had a theory that musicians are incredibly complex, and know far less than other artists what they want and what they are; that they puzzle themselves as well as their friends; that their psychology is a modern development, and has not yet been understood.
Edward Carpenter
In the case of Michel Angelo we have an artist who with brush and chisel portrayed literally thousands of human forms; but with this peculiarity, that while scores and scores of his male figures are obviously suffused and inspired by a romantic sentiment, there is hardly one of his female figures that is so,
Edward Carpenter

No amount of skillful invention can replace the essential element of imagination.
Edward Hopper
Great art is the outward expression of an inner life in the artist, and this inner life will result in his personal vision of the world.
Francisco de Goya
Fantasy, abandoned by reason, produces impossible monsters; united with it, she is the mother of the arts and the origin of marvels.
Friedrich Nietzsche
That is an artist as I love artists, modest in his needs: he really wants only two things, his bread and his art - panem et Circen.
G.K. Chesterton
My own general thesis was somewhat to this effect: that Artists have worried the world by being wantonly, needlessly, and gratuitously progressive. Politicians have to be progressive; that is, they have to live in the future, because they know they have done nothing but evil in the past. But Artists, who have been right from the beginning of the world, who were, perhaps, the only people who were right even in the beginning of the world, decorating pottery or designing rude frescoes on the rock when other people were fighting or offering human sacrifice, they have no right to despise their own past.
Gary D. Schmidt

Funny how we do not realize the true value and legacy of a living icon until they suddenly pass away. Truth is, there are many living legends among us, we just do not stop and take time to notice their worth until it's too late.
Grant Morrison
Writers and artists build by hand little worlds that they hope might effect change in real minds, in the real world where stories are read. A story can make us cry and laugh, break our hearts, or make us angry enough to change the world.
Grayson Perry
The sound a box of Lego makes is the noise of a child's mind working, looking for the right piece. Shake it, and it's almost creativity in aural form.
Gustave Flaubert
The public wants work which flatters its illusions.
Gustave Flaubert
The artist must manage to make posterity believe that he never existed.
Gustave Flaubert
You don't make art out of good intentions.
Gustave Flaubert
If you participate in life, you don't see it clearly: you suffer from it too much or enjoy it too much. The artist, to my way of thinking, is a monstrosity, something outside nature. All the misfortunes Providence inflicts on him come from his stubborness in denying that maxim.
H.L. Mencken
The great artists of the world are never Puritans, and seldom even ordinarily respectable.
H.S. Ede
A great artist is conscious of the talent and the power he possesses, otherwise he would not see his faults, and so would not be able to improve.
Harry Belafonte
After all, Paul Robeson said, 'Artists are the radical voice of civilization.' Each and every one of you in this room, with your gifts and your power and your skills, could perhaps change the way in which our global humanity mistrusts itself. Perhaps we as artists and as visionaries, for what's better in the human heart and the human soul, could influence citizens everywhere in the world to see the better side of who and what we are as a species.
Haruki Murakami
Artists are those who can evade the verbose.
Heather Demetrios
I've never been somewhere I belonged, but there are places where I think I could be happy. Like San Francisco. Well, do art museums count? Because I feel like I belong in them.
Heather Demetrios
My eyes roved over the walls covered with my collages and prints of famous paintings. Magritte, Kandinsky, Kahlo. My origami shapes hung from fishing wire, dangling over my bed. They shivered in the slight breeze blowing through my open window. It was my own little escape pod, but none of it was enough tonight.
Heather Demetrios
I thought of the cool, fresh air of the city I'd always dreamed of living in. The art museums and trolleys and the mysterious fog that blanketed it. I could almost smell the cappuccinos I'd planned to drink in bohemian cafes or hear the indie music in the bookstores I would spend my free time in. I pictured the friends I'd make, my kindred art people, and the dorm room I was supposed to move into.
Henry Miller
Who but the artist has the power to open man up, to set free the imagination? The others - priest, teacher, saint, statesman, warrior - hold us to the path of history. They keep us chained to the rock, that the vultures may eat out our hearts. It is the artist who has the courage to go against the crowd; he is the unrecognized hero of our time - and of all time.
I.M. Pei
Great artists need great clients.
Irving Stone
It's freezing up here. What did you use to keep warm?Indignation, said Michelangelo. Best fuel I know. Never burns out.
James Joyce
The artist, like the God of creation, remains within or behind or beyond or above his handiwork, invisible, refined out of existence, indifferent, paring his fingernails
Javaria Waseem
Love is an art and this love lacks artists.

Jennifer Donnelly
It's a good thing you and your pills weren't around a few hundred years ago or there never would have been a Vermeer or a Caravaggio. You'd have drugged Girl with a Pearl Earring and The Taking of Christ right the hell out of them.
Jennifer Egan
Too Clear, too clean. The problem was precision, perfection; the problem was digitization which sucked the life out of everything that got smeared through its microscopic mesh. Film, photography, music: dead. An aesthetic holocaust!
Jessica Lave
We can never be entirely original, as artists or as people. The genius and vision of those who came before us is too great for us to digress from entirely. Though, as creatures that are compelled to test and surpass our own creative abilities, we must always strive for that originality in everything we do in order to move the world forward.
Joe Meno
She puts away four small plastic cups of red wine and then stares at a painting of a topless girl with a large silver sword for a half hour and then she begins to think: You call this art? This isn't art! This is a joke! All of you are a joke! Fuck you and fuck Jeff Koons and the rest of those '80s art-star wannabes. Where's the art that makes people weep? Where's the art that makes people want to go to church? None of this is the least bit interesting. All of this stuff, all of this is so self-aware. It's for ironic art snobs. I want something brilliant. I want something stunning. I want something that makes me look in wonder…
John Berryman
I do strongly feel that among the greatest pieces of luck for high achievement is ordeal. Certain great artists can make out without it, Titian and others, but mostly you need ordeal. My idea is this: the artist is extremely lucky who is presented with the worst possible ordeal which will not actually kill him. At that point, he's in business: Beethoven's deafness, Goya's deafness, Milton's blindness, that kind of thing.
John Green
Things belong to the people that use them, not to the people who create them.
John Lubbock
What we do see depends mainly on what we look for. ... In the same field the farmer will notice the crop, the geologists the fossils, botanists the flowers, artists the colouring, sportmen the cover for the game. Though we may all look at the same things, it does not all follow that we should see them.
John Paul II
Not all are called to be artists in the specific sense of the term. Yet, as Genesis has it, all men and women are entrusted with the task of crafting their own life: in a certain sense, they are to make of it a work of art, a masterpiece.
Jordan Peterson
The data on the economic utility of artists is really, really strong. Artists and entrepreneurs are the same people...and of course entrepreneurs are the people who provide all of the vision for the entire capitalist system. They're absolutely necessary. But conservatives tend to be so blind to art that they can't even see that the artists are the ones who drive the economy forward!
Josef Albers
It's the only dish I serve my craziness for color in.
Joy Harjo
Bless the poets, the workers for justice, the dancers of ceremony, the singers of heartache, the visionaries, all makers and carriers of fresh meaning
Joyce Cary
I will admit that I wanted to shout for standing on the top of a scaffold in front of a good new wall always goes to my head. It is a sensation something between that of an angel let out of his cage into a new sky and a drunkard turned loose in a royal cellar. And after all, what nobler elevation could you find in this world than the scaffold of a wall painter? No admiral on the bridge of a new battleship designed by the old navy, could feel more pleased with himself than Gulley, on two planks, forty feet above dirt level, with his palette table beside him, his brush in his hand, and the draught blowing up his trousers; cleared for action.
Joyce Cary
B-but, Mr Jimson, I w-want to be an artist.''Of course you do,' I said, 'everybody does once. But they get over it, thank God, like the measles and the chickenpox. Go home and go to bed and take some hot lemonade and put on three blankets and sweat it out.''But Mr J-Jimson, there must be artists.''Yes, and lunatics and lepers, but why go and live in an asylum before you're sent for? If you find life a bit dull at home,' I said, 'and want to amuse yourself, put a stick of dynamite in the kitchen fire, or shoot a policeman. Volunteer for a test pilot, or dive off Tower Bridge with five bob's worth of roman candles in each pocket. You'd get twice the fun at about one-tenth of the risk.
Justin Wetch
As artists, we create the beautyWe are too afraid to live outAnd search, but always fall just shyOf finding what life is about.
Jyrki Vainonen
Dive again and again into the river of uncertainty. Create in the dark, only then can you recognize the light.
Kamand Kojouri
Now is not the time for bigots and racists. No time for sexists and homophobes. Now, more than ever, is the time for ARTISTS. It's time for us to rise above and to create. To show humanity. To spread hope. We must prevent society from destroying itself, from losing its way. Now is the time for love.
Karen Blixen
Then Martine said: So yuo will be poor now all your life, Babette?Poor? said Babette. She smiled as if to herself. No, I shall never be poor. I told you that I am a great artist. A great artist, Mesdames, is never poor.We have something, Mesdames, of which other people know nothing.
Katherine Reay
Artists create things that point us to beauty, to truth, to God.
Kilroy J. Oldster
The human mind's innate ability to imagine and create ensures that we never remain stalled out in who we are. We constantly seek to amend our circumference and circumstances, craft and redraft our emotional, social, political, economic, and artistic being.
Kilroy J. Oldster
Beauty surrounds us, but oftentimes it takes a person with a poetic perception, an artist's way of looking at the world, to first notice the sublime, and then stagecraft the splendor of nature so that other people can perceive their synoptic vision. The spirit and aesthetic intention behind the work is what assigns the work its artistic quality. Great works of poetry and writing, for instance, express not simply a criticism of life, but also encompass a philosophy for living.
Kilroy J. Oldster
A person's work allows their character to form and provides a creative outlet for their inner world of imaginative thoughts and creative impulses. A person whom fails to find suitable work that allows their soul room to grow will quickly begin eroding into a withered and desiccated being.
Kilroy J. Oldster
Any person whom seeks to live a historical existence must devote their efforts to learning about the world, care about people and nature, and seek to express their thoughts in the artistic methodology most appropriate to their particular talent. A person cannot fake self-awareness or imitate an artistic nature. A person must honestly earn a heightened level of conscious awareness.
Kilroy J. Oldster
Making art requires a degree of intentionality. All works of art require a contemplative individual drawing from their bank of knowledge and immersion into the realms of memory and imagination in order to make an outward, communicative expression. Only human beings can draw upon the dialectical tension between memory and imagination to create artistic renderings.
Kilroy J. Oldster
Art translates human souls. Each passing eon's public display of sophisticated hieroglyphics cast a unique depiction upon the rudimentary art of survival.
Kilroy J. Oldster
Behind every creative act is a statement of love. Every artistic creation is a statement of gratitude.
Kilroy J. Oldster
The human spirit's unquenchable drive for originality and compulsion for creating art is the compelling force of our humanity.
Kilroy J. Oldster
Generations cometh and generations passeth, but the earth abideth forever. While successive generations live and die, and all things change, man can never rest until death claims us. I choose to use my time alone to contemplate human existence, probe the human condition, and trace what it means to be one man in our modern world. There can be no profit from my labor, no lasting yield realized from this laborious and painful sojourn. We will leave everything behind. The earth shall dissolve all of our acquisitions and obliterate all traces of our petty affections. Passage of time shall alter, not annihilate the products of any artistic labors. The substance of our artistic enterprises shall continue forward in a renewed and redefined state.
Kilroy J. Oldster
Art is a distinct form of human communication. Art interprets experience, sensation, and feelings. An artistic work translates our mental images and allows other people to understand what we feel; art conveys our happiness, sadness, hopes, doubts, anxieties, fears, desires, and ineffable longings.
Kilroy J. Oldster
We might respect a serious person with an austere and rigid personality, but we adore merry, kindhearted, and artistic people.
Kilroy J. Oldster
Creating art is paradoxical because an artist seeks to express truth by penetrating and destroying illusions. Art is always the outpouring of a mind striving to achieve the impossible reconciliation of all the fragmented shards that make people human: frivolous amusements, idle moments, feelings of tenderness and pain, stored memories, future expectations, and unquenchable thirst to experience love and witness beauty.
Lawrence Durrell
Underneath an artist's preoccupations with sex, society, religion, etc. (all the staple abstractions that allow the forebrain to chatter) there is a soul tortured beyond endurance by the lack of tenderness in the world.
Leela Corman
My mother supported my every artistic ambition. I don't wonder why. I'm beyond grateful. But when I think of my grandparents barely surviving the war, I feel so pampered. What an indulgence to be an artist. So this is it, this is all I can offer, to the living and to the dead.
Logan Pearsall Smith
The notion of making money by popular work, and then retiring to do good work, is the most familiar of all the devil's traps for artists.
Lois Farfel Stark
We form a mental map, and then that shape, shapes us
Loren Weisman
The average artist has a naïve, unrealistic, and disconnected view of what the music industry is, how it works, what is involved in making it, and what actually is happening behind the scenes. Too many artists take at face value what they see on some TV documentary or read in a fan magazine. Whether you are working with others in a band, looking to connect with a manager, an agent, a label, or an investor, or you just want to work in the industry, it is more crucial than ever to know what you are working for and toward.
Lucy H. Pearce
Creativity takes courage. Not just once, but consistently. Without courage we cannot be creative. Without feeling fear at some point we will not reach our creative potential. From first putting paint on paper through to selling our work on a worldwide stage there is plenty to be scared of. But this is where creativity lives
Marcel Duchamp
The individual, man as a man, man as a brain, if you like, interests me more than what he makes, because I've noticed that most artists only repeat themselves.
Marcel Duchamp
Possible reality [is obtained] by slightly bending physical and chemical laws.
Marcel Duchamp
I don't believe in art. I believe in artists.
Mauricio Lasansky
Dignity is not a symbol bestowed on man, nor does the word itself possess force. Man's dignity is a force and the only modus vivendi by which man and his history survive. When mid-twentieth century Germany did not let man live and die with this right, man became an animal. No matter how technologically advanced or sophisticated, when man negates this divine right, he not only becomes self-destructive, but castrates his history and poisons our future. This is what 'The Nazi Drawings' are about.
Mehmet Murat ildan
The dictators, commanders or emperors who want to conquer the world soon realize that the world has already been conquered by the artists and their arts!
Mehmet Murat ildan
Not only the artist watches his art with admiration but his art also watches his artist with admiration!
Mehmet Murat ildan
Art symbolizes our perfect ability in the matter of enriching the reality!
Mokokoma Mokhonoana
Some artists benefit less from being interviewed than they do from being left alone.
Mokokoma Mokhonoana
An artist that makes art merely to meet a demand is a slave to what his patrons wants to see, or, hear.
Mokokoma Mokhonoana
Some of the people who hate me love some of the sentences that I have written, until they get to the name of the person to whom the sentences are attributed.
Nayyirah Waheed
creativity keeps the world alive, yet, everyday we are asked to be ashamed of honoring it, wanting to live our lives as artists. i've carried the shame of being a 'creative' since i came to the planet; have been asked to be something different, more, less my whole life. thank spirit, my wisdom is deeper than my shame, and i listened to who i was. i want to say to all the creatives who have been taught to believe who you are is not enough for this world, taught that a life of art will amount to nothing, know that who we are, and what we do is life. when we create, we are creating the world. remember this, and commit.
Neel Burton
An artist is someone who, needing nothing and no one, wants everything and everyone.
Neil Gaiman
And remember whatever discipline you're in, whether you're a musician or a photographer, fine artist or a cartoonist, writer, a dancer, a singer, a designer... whatever you do, you have a thing that's unique. You have the ability to make art.
Nuno Roque
All my images are self-portraits, even when I'm not in them.

France, stop throwing awards at me! I have so many already, give them to people who need them.
Nuno Roque
I had artistic classical training, and when you learn the classics for so many years, you might gain audacity, power and confidence to subvert everything. I am like the originals buffoons. I love the rules because I can break them.
Nuno Roque
I think we live in a time where artists are very tidy and afraid of what others might think. They hesitate in expressing their views and opinions. So being original is rare. For me, it's about living the life you create for yourself, to create your kingdom. I think we should work on being our unique selves and becoming our greatest versions. I like to remind people to take the power to live their life the way they wish.
Nuno Roque
Sometimes people can be negative, especially about my confidence. I trust myself, I refuse to obey, and I noticed there is a need to punish me for it. But haters are important because they show you you're doing something right. I'm scared of unanimity, artists who everybody likes. When you speak your mind and you're loud, you will attract negativity. But I have thick skin, I think the fact that I was severely bullied in my childhood helped me build strength and believe in my artistic vision. I deal with rejection very well. I have a lifelong vision and an unbreakable spirit.
Nuno Roque
Realism is criminal.

Fascinated by the great symbols of the collective history, I use them as an alphabet to communicate.

Pop is about speaking everybody's language. The imagery and iconography we instantly recognize. When you can rely on things that the public already knows, you're dealing with Pop.

It isn't that I dislike artists, but I can't stand anyone who puts on those ponderous airs of a man of character.
Oscar Wilde
An artist should create beautiful things, but should put nothing of his own life into them.
Oscar Wilde
The only artists I have ever known who are personally delightful are bad artists. Good artists exist simply in what they make, and consequently are perfectly uninteresting in what they are. A great poet, a really great poet, is the most unpoetical of all creatures. But inferior poets are absolutely fascinating. The worse their rhymes are, the more picturesque they look. The mere fact of having published a book of second-rate sonnets makes a man quite irresistible. He lives the poetry that he cannot write. The others write the poetry that they dare not realize.
Patti Smith
I preferred an artist who transformed his time, not mirrored it.
Paul Klee Foundation
Art does not reproduce the visible; rather, it makes visible.
Paulo Coelho
An artist who desires very little and achieves it has failed in life.
Raheel Farooq
Philosophers wonder when they do not know, artists when they do.
Ramana Pemmaraju
Art is the medium through which you express the inexpressible, convey the unconveyable, transporting the audience in different realms of existence erasing their mental identities. Any effort by the artist to make an personal identity is detrimental in an artistic sense. Be Wiser, leave no residue, dissolve in ART!
Rasheed Ogunlaru
Despair and disappointment are the parent of countless inspired, inspiring, triumphant creations
René Magritte
As regards the artists themselves, most of them gave up their freedom quite lightly, placing their art at the service of someone or something. As a rule, their concerns and their ambitions are those of any old careerist. I thus acquired a total distrust of art and artists, whether they were officially recognised or were endeavouring to become so, and I felt that I had nothing in common with this guild. I had a point of reference which held me elsewhere, namely that magic within art which I had encountered as a child.
Richelle E. Goodrich
Art doesn't bare itself to just anyone, but to believers called artists.
Robert Hughes
It is hard to think of any work of art of which one can say 'this saved the life of one Jew, one Vietnamese, one Cambodian'. Specific books, perhaps; but as far as one can tell, no paintings or sculptures. The difference between us and the artists of the 1920's is that they they thought such a work of art could be made. Perhaps it was a certain naivete that made them think so. But it is certainly our loss that we cannot.
Robert Hughes
Nevertheless, what was made in the hope of transforming the world need not be rejected because it failed to do so
Robert Hughes
What does one prefer? An art that struggles to change the social contract, but fails? Or one that seeks to please and amuse, and succeeds?
Robert Walser
Artists, as a rule, understand nothing about business, or, for some reason or other, they aren't allowed to understand anything about it.
Roberto Bolaño
We're artists too, but we do a good job hiding it, don't we?
Roman Payne
All forms of madness, bizarre habits, awkwardness in society, general clumsiness, are justified in the person who creates good art.
Roman Payne
I've decided the act that cannot wait / is the important will to create / But, ah, if my belly is ignored / the pantry door I shall implore / But I've been known to reach the bed / ideas still famished in my head.
Roman Payne
I will always know the glory of the beautiful and rare, as they will know security from labour and prayer. As they will hear the laughter of the children they gave life, I will know the torments of the song born under knife.
Roman Payne
He was no god, just an artist; and when an artist is a man, he needs a woman to create like a god.
Roman Payne
Fueled by my inspiration, I ran across the room to steal the cup of coffee the bookshelf had taken prisoner. Lapping the black watery brew like a hyena, I tossed the empty cup aside. I then returned to the chair to continue my divine act of creation. Hot blood swished in my head as my mighty pen stole across the page.
Sarah Ruhl
This is what it is to love an artist: The moon is always rising above your house. The houses of your neighbors look dull and lacking in moonlight. But he is always going away from you. Inside his head there is always something more beautiful.
Sarah Thornton
Although the art world reveres the unconventional, it is rife with conformity. Artists make work that looks like art and behave in ways that enhance stereotypes. Curators pander to the expectations of their peers and their museum boards. Collectors run in herds to buy work by a handful of fashionable painters. Critics stick their finger in the air to see which way the wind is blowing so as to get it right. Originality is not always rewarded, but some people take real risks and innovate, which gives a raison d'être to the rest.
Saru Singhal
Art lovers ought to be crazy. That's how they see the fun side of everything.
Saul Bellow
The human being now simply can't close his elected garment about himself. Obligations to one's fellows perhaps prevent full buttoning by artists.
Sebastian Horsley
The motivation of all artists is 'Look at me, Mum'.
Seth Godin
At the age of four, you were an artist. And at seven, you were a poet.
Seth Godin
Art isn't only a painting; it's anything that changes someone for the better, any nonanonymous interaction that leads to a human (not simply a commercial) conclusion.
Seth Godin
Great work is not created for everyone. If it were, it would be average work.
Seth Godin
The job is what you do when you are told what to do. The job is showing up at the factory, following instructions, meeting spec, and being managed.Someone can always do your job a little better or faster or cheaper than you can.The job might be difficult, it might require skill, but it's a job.Your art is what you do when no one can tell you exactly how to do it. Your art is the act of taking personal responsibility, challenging the status quo, and changing people.I call the process of doing your art 'the work.' It's possible to have a job and do the work, too. In fact, that's how you become a linchpin. The job is not the work.
Shah Asad Rizvi
Caution not spirit, let it roam wild; for in that natural state dance embraces divine frequency.
Shah Asad Rizvi
Through synergy of intellect, artistry and grace came into existence the blessing of a dancer.
Shah Asad Rizvi
Spirit is a child, the tune of dancing feet its lullaby.
Shah Asad Rizvi
Burdened no more is soul for whom life flows through dance and not breath.
Shah Asad Rizvi
Burdened no more is soul for whom life flows through dance like breath.
Shah Asad Rizvi
Don't breathe to survive; dance and feel alive.
Shannon L. Alder
Art is nothing more than creating an emotion in your own form.
Shannon L. Alder
Often the inspiration to write music comes from the voices in your head. You're not crazy. Just be thankful they are not making you rescue people in 20-degree weather at 2:30 in the morning in the forest.
Siren Waroe
What a major mistake, having rejected pretty much all of the great talented female artists that have lived throughout the ages, art history is left incomplete. The validity of the written art history is as absent as those women left out.
Siri Hustvedt
I am fascinated that no one I have read seems to have noticed that the literature on Picasso continually turns grown-up women into girls.
Solange nicole
It's a shame how much artists have to bleed for people to enjoy their work.
Spider Webb
Tattooing, when understood in its entirety, must be seen as a religious act. The human being brings forth images from the center of the self and communicates them to the world. Fantasy is embodied in reality and the person is made whole.
Stacey H. Lee
My father said that artists see the world differently than normal people. I see a tree where you mights see a collection of lines, shapes, and shadows.
Steven Pressfield, Turning Pro
What we get when we turn pro is we find our power. We find our will and our voice and we find our self-respect. We become who we always were but had, until then, been afraid to embrace and live out.
Suzy Kassem
A person who is truly cool is a work of art. And remember, original works of art cost exponentially higher than imitations. Just take a look at the the coolest people in history. They will always be a part of history for being extremely original individuals, not imitations.
Suzy Kassem
If I could remove one thing from the world and replace it with something else, I would erase politics and put art in its place. That way, art teachers would rule the world. And since art is the most supreme form of love, beautiful colors and imagery would weave bridges for peace wherever there are walls. Artists, who are naturally heart-driven, would decorate the world with their love, and in that love

Teresa R. Funke, Bursts of Brilliance for a Creative Life blog
If you haven't proclaimed it in your own life, do it now. Say, I am an artist.
Thomas Bernhard
You've always lived a life of pretense, not a real life-- a simulated existence, not a genuine existence. Everything about you, everything you are, has always been pretense, never genuine, never real.
Tom Robbins
Well, Daddy, I used to believe that artists went crazy in the process of creating the beautiful works of art that kept society sane. Nowadays, though, artists make intentionally ugly art that's only supposed to reflect society rather than inspire it. So I guess we're all loony together now, loony rats in the shithouse of commercialism.
Ursula K. Le Guin
The trouble is that we have a bad habit, encouraged by pedants and sophisticates, of considering happiness as something rather stupid. Only pain is intellectual, only evil interesting. This is the treason of the artist; a refusal to admit the banality of evil and the terrible boredom of pain.
Virginia Woolf
Women have sat indoors all these millions of years, so that by this time the very walls are permeated by their creative force, which has, indeed, so overcharged the capacity of bricks and mortar that it must needs harness itself to pens and brushes and business and politics.
W. Somerset Maugham
Every production of an artist should be the expression of an adventure of his soul.
Walter Isaacson
Picasso had a saying - 'good artists copy, great artists steal' - and we have always been shameless about stealing great ideas.
Walter Kirn
I've been told my old city possesses a 'thriving arts scene,' whatever that is; personally, I think artists should lie low and stick to their work, not line-dance through the parks.
